Taiwan in FIL 2023 to Extend Influence in Spanish Market

Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) has been collaborating with Taipei Book Fair Foundation this year to extend Taiwan's publishers' influence into the Spanish market. By: Dylan Low

Both organisations have released the Taiwan Pavilion at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) in Mexico, the leading trade event in the Spanish-speaking scene. Targeting increasing reception for graphic publications, the named titles this year entails graphic works, comprising Manga, graphic novels, and children's books. To advertise title rights, the Taiwan delegation will utilise the Books from Taiwan (BFT) initiative and the translation/publishing permissions by the Ministry of Culture.

The Taiwan Pavilion owns a catalogue in English/Spanish languages for FIL 2023, which aims to target a higher number of publishers, helping to create connections for right exchanges.

TAICCA Chairman Homme Tsai states that graphic books have the ability to overcome language barriers. Recently, graphic creators in Taiwan have achieved multiple global accolades and awards, showcasing the diverse appeal of the rights dealing. FIL allows a major opportunity for international partnerships and co-productions.

It is expected to take place from November 25th to December 3rd, with Taiwan Pavilion organizing an opening ceremony on November 27th. Taiwan Pavilion will be displaying 128 titles from 31 publishers, comprising children's books, illustrated books, graphic novels, and comics. To set up licensing engagement, TAICCA and Taipei Book Fair Foundation have organised meetup events between Taiwan and Chile while rights representatives at the pavilion help suggest titles to international counterparts. Ibero-American University has also invited TAICCA and a Taiwanese right professional to speak about their experiences in worldwide book fairs and their developments to share graphic projects from Taiwan.
