Christopher Nolan Heaps Praise on Zack Snyder’s Influence

Zack Snyder is currently topping the Netflix charts with his space film Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, boosted with a huge showcase of support from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. By: Dylan Low

Nolan has mentioned Snyder’s influence on cinema is so commanding to the point that part of his touch can be felt in any “superhero science-fiction film coming out these days.”

The Oppenheimer filmmaker had previously collaborated with Snyder, as a producer on the 2013 superhero film Man of Steel, based on a story Nolan came up with his Dark Knight trilogy co-writer David S. Goyer. Nolan and Snyder have had a friendship ever since then.

“There’s no superhero science-fiction film coming out these days where I don’t see some influence of Zack,” Nolan commended, “When you watch a Zack Snyder film, you see and feel his love for the potential of cinema. The potential of it to be fantastical, to be heightened in its reality, but to move you and to excite you.”

Nolan has been openly supportive of Snyder during the filmmaking of Rebel Moon. He previously heaped praise on Watchmen, Snyder’s 2009 comic book adaptation film which garnered mixed reviews. Nolan stated, “I’ve always believed Watchmen was ahead of its time. The idea of a superhero team, which it so brilliantly subverts, wasn’t yet a thing in movies. It would have been fascinating to see it released post-Avengers.”

Snyder’s filmmaker career has claimed much divided opinion, continuing with the premiere of Rebel Moon. The Netflix original claimed mostly negative reviews on its debut, with Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman comparing it a “Star Wars knockoff” and “insanely derivative” in his review. The film showcases Sofia Boutella as an ex-soldier who has to recruit warriors from across the universe in order to fight and battle against the tyrannical Imperium. The movie premiered to 23.9 million views in its first three days of screening on Netflix.
