Amazon Prime Video Introduces Ad-Tier in UK

Amazon is slated to bring in an ad-tier to its premium streaming platform Prime Video in the UK, which begins from February 5th. By: Dylan Low

As stated by Amazon, this move will see “limited advertisements” be added on films and TV shows broadcasted on the Prime Video platform in the UK and Germany, not including rented or purchased content.

The news follows after the company’s announcement to debut an ad-tier to Prime Video customers in the US starting on January 29th.

The major streaming powerhouse follows in the same direction as Netflix and Disney+, that both also initiated a low-cost ad-supported and ad-free subscription last year.

Although Amazon Prime Video’s ad-tier will be priced the same as its ad-free subscription at the moment. Amazon Prime Video will also showcase its ad-free offering for their subscribers, which charges an extra fee of £2.99 a month.

The ad-free plan is currently available for registration but customers will not be charged until February 5th. Prime Video has mentioned the ad-tier launch currently excludes subscribers located in Ireland, Channel Island, and Isle of Man.

In an email sent to current subscribers, Amazon stated this change will benefit in boosting investment in long term content.

“We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership,” Amazon added further details.

Live events such as sports, and Amazon Freevee content will keep up to include advertising. Ad-based plans will showcase on Prime Video in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in 2024.
