Golden Globe Ratings Triumphs on CBS

Upon its inaugural launch on CBS, the Golden Globes attained a staggering 9.4 million views, which saw a 50% surge from the previous year’s award ceremony, according to Nielsen. By: Cassia Ling

Hosted by Jerrod Carmichael in 2023, the conflation of NBC and Peacock only amassed to a 1.1 rating among the prime 18-49 adult demographic and 6.3 million views, which waned from the erstwhile year.

CBS becomes the new distribution home to the Golden Globes this year, following a treacherous bout for the gala ceremony after news of the Golden Globes’ scandal went rife. NBC was formerly the Golden Globes’ content distributor, and had commenced its first ceremony in 1996.

Concomitant to the other years, the 81st annual Golden Globes did not trudge smoothly after Jo Koy had delivered a controversial speech as host. The wry faces manifested from the crowd stemmed from the comedian-actor’s sneer as he mocks several supernovas including Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Barbie ensemble Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig.

In whole, the night had awarded big hits for several first-time winners including The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Succession’s Kieran Culkin, and The Bear’s Ayo Edibiri. The biggest blockbuster film that went abuzz in 2023’s penultimate quarter, Oppenheimer has wiped up 5 awards including best motion picture drama, while the throne was ceded to Succession in the TV facet, sweeping away 4 wins for its final season which concluded in May. The gig had also acquired best drama series.

On Paramount+, the Sunday gala event had also transcended records after garnering the largest live-streaming audience for the show across the platform and other CBS outlets since the 65th Grammy Awards which launched in February 2023. The award ceremony marks the “second-largest live-streamed CBS special event on Paramount+ ever in terms of AMA and reach” and had dominated as the top search on social media with close to 30 billion potential impressions.
