Finecut Acquires Korean Horror movie, Noise for Berlin Film Market Debut

Top Korean film sales agent Finecut now owns international distribution rights to Noise, a present-day horror film by inaugural director Kim Soo-jin. The film will be released next month at the European film Market in Berlin. By: Dylan Low

The story talks about a woman with a hearing impairment who is haunted by sounds linked to her sister’s disappearance and the presence of a malicious spirit. It leads to a dark secret and the appearance of an unknown entity.

The film dives into the unnerving issue of disturbing sounds with a unknown origin in urban environments, known in Korean as “floor noise.” According to a recent survey by the Korean Environment Corporation, the number of complaints related to floor noise has doubled in the past five years. Floor noises have been correlated with multiple legal disputes and murder cases. The film showcases the tale of residents in an apartment complex who slowly transcend to madness by mysterious sounds.

Kim is best noted for the short film The Line which was featured at the Cine foundation of the 66th Cannes festival.

Lee Sun-bin plays the titular role as the woman with a hearing aid, whose previous work comprises of Coupang Play’s Boyhood, TV’s Work Now, Drink Later and Mission: Possible.

The main cast is rounded off by Kim Min-seok (Body Parts, Shark: The Beginning), featuring as the missing sister’s boyfriend; Ryu Kyung-soo (Netflix’s The Bequeathed, Itaewon Class and Tale of the Nine-Tailed) as the downstairs neighbour who complains about the noise and threatens the protagonist.

The film, currently in post-production, is presented by KC Ventures and produced by Studio Finecut (Christmas Carol, Netflix series See You in My 19th Life).
