TMNT Kicked off Comic-con with No A-list Stars due to Strike
'Mutants of Mayhem' director Jeff Rowe took the centre stage, though notable stars were absent due to an ongoing actor's strike.
Seth Rogen, serving as the film’s producer and actor was absent from the studio due to the writers and actors strike. However, director of the film brought Jeff Rowe to the stage and generously revealed 20 minutes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The convention centre’s huge Hall H, where Hollywood stars and studios typically unveil the latest superhero movies to screaming fans who camp in line for days to get in, was markedly more relaxed than in previous years.
Rowe unveiled a good portion of the film, and it was well-received by audiences at San Diego Comic-Con. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to release in August in theatres. The story follows the four turtle heroes, making a run for groceries around town at night, deciding to catch a movie in the park and dreaming how great life would be if humans were fond of them and the turtles would lead normal lives like them.
Subsequently, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles find themselves facing disciplinary action from their father, Splinter. The story then delves into a recap of their origin, introducing the audience to the background of these heroes. As the narrative unfolds, we are also introduced to the main antagonist, and finally, the turtles' encounter with the human girl, April O'Neil, results in a chaotic altercation, leaving a group of criminals completely defeated.
Rowe expressed that the characters meant a lot to him as a child, “It’s what taught me to be a fan. We looked at how we used to draw in high school, when you’re so passionate but you don’t know how to draw but you don’t know that you don’t know how to draw yet.
“So you’ll lovingly draw a hand, drawing every fingernail, every wrinkle, but the hand is horribly misshapen. There is no formal art training to encumber your pure expression. And we said, let’s do that,” he described the style of the animated film.
The surprise appearance of TMNT creator Kevin Eastman on the panel announced that Nickelodeon and Paramount have secured the rights to the original TMNT animated series that aired in the late 1980s. “It’s been almost 40 years and I’m still drawing Turtles thanks to you guys,” he said.
