All3Media Launches Australian dramas
All3Media International is set to distribute more original Australian dramas. Their local and international performance can be anticipated. By Ching Wai.
Australia - One returning and two upcoming original Australian dramas from Stan will be globally distributed by All3Media International. Stan is an Australian over-the-top (OTT) streaming service launched in 2015, a little like a smaller Australian version of Netflix. All3Media International’s move to bring the dramas to a wider audience will give the Australian originals greater exposure to the film market.
The second season of Black Snow, directed by Sian Davies, is produced in association with All3Media International and Sundance Now. Despite a rather good run with two 2023 local awards nominations, the drama was not able to reach astonishing levels of popularity. Karl Quinn from The Sydney Morning Herald gave the first season of the drama a three and a half stars review. He positively described it to be “a real breath of fresh air” and “an effective crime drama that does pretty much all you could ask of it. But lurking inside there’s a whole legion of more challenging ideas.” Luke Buckmaster of Guardian gave a three stars review, describing it to be “darkly entertaining” and “a mostly well-made murder mystery that starts strong but runs out of gas as it approaches its twist-filled ending.”
The two other original dramas are Exposure and Critical Incident. Exposure will be a six-episode psychological thriller starring Alice Englert. Englert is known for her roles in Beautiful Creatures, Top of the Lake, and The Serpent. The drama was written and created by Lucy Coleman, who also directed the 2017 comedy thriller Hot Mess. Bonnie Moir who directed season 2 of the Australian TV series Love Me is the director for Exposure. It will premiere this year as a Stan original in Australia.
Critical Incident is a contemporary crime drama series set in the Western suburbs of Sydney. It explores the complicated world of policing and its effects on those most vulnerable. The drama is directed by Neil Sharma and Daniel Nettheim. Sharma has directed the comedy drama series Heartbreak High, and was an assistant director on big productions like Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Mortal Kombat (2021), and was credited in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Nettheim directed three episodes of the thriller drama The Tourist, and the remaining three episodes of season two of Line of Duty. With such experienced production crews, it makes sense for All3Media to be confident that the Australian dramas will reach expectations and perform well locally and internationally.
