Robert Downey Jr. on Marriage and Career after 2024 Oscars Win

In an interview with PEOPLE, the Iron Man star and his wife opened up about his career and their marriage. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.

US - Following his first Oscar win, the Best Supporting Actor award for his role of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer (2023), at the 96th Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. recently spoke about his life and family.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that his win at the 2024 Oscars also reminded him of his late father, an indie filmmaker who passed three years ago.

"Senior went to his grave going, '[You] got robbed for Chaplin.' He wouldn't say he really thought any of my other movies were very good or even that he thought Chaplin was any good, but he did know that I got robbed."

Downey’s wife, Susan, also revealed that the couple has a rule where they do not go more than two weeks without seeing each other so as to sustain their marriage. She also praised Downey for his positive influence on the family.

"I came from an incredibly stable household and Robert's was, let's say, less than that. And yet he's the one who brings the real kind of homey-ness to it, and I just make sure everything's working and running well. He really does believe in giving back, and he does it through his actions,” she added.

The former drug addict teased that he had no plans of slowing down his Hollywood career after the recent win: “I got a couple other tricks up my sleeve.” He next stars in the HBO espionage drama The Sympathiser (2024), out April 14.

For fans hoping for a return to his most famous role of Tony Stark / Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe however, it was previously confirmed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in December 2023 that Downey’s run for the character had ended and that Downey would not reprise the role.
