The premiere of ARK: The Animated Series on 21 March 2024 came as a surprise. The series adaptation boasts a roster of well-known celebrities. By Ching Wai.
The Americas - ARK: The Animated Series is a new sci-fi animation that premiered on Thursday, 21 March. The animation’s first six episodes debuted exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, and will be released globally on 19 April. The remaining seven episodes will be released at a later date.
The animated epic is based on the video game ARK: Survival Evolved, created by game developer Studio Wildcard. It features a 21st-century Australian palaeontologist resurrected into an entirely different world that is filled with dinosaurs. The animation sees a list of well-known celebrities for the voice cast, including Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh, Russell Crowe, Gerard Butler, David Tennant, Jeffrey Wright, Elliot Page, Madeleine Madden and Vin Diesel.
The series is produced by Lost Continent Entertainment and Lex + Otis, with a number of executive producers like Jeremy Stieglitz, Jesse Rapczak, Marc Diana, Doug Kennedy, Jay Oliva, James Baldanzi, Vin Diesel, Samantha Vincent, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, and Russell Crowe. The directors of the series are Stieglitz, Oliva, David Hartman and Sebastian Montes, and the co-writers are Marguerite Bennett and Kendall Deacon Davis.
Initial reactions from viewers have been mixed - some welcome the nostalgia from seeing the video game as an animation, while others criticised the series’ pacing, plot choices, and differences in characters. These come as the series was just released, so it will not be fair to immediately measure its success. But with a star-studded voice cast and an existing fan base from the video game eager to watch the series, further news of and reactions to ARK: The Animated Series can be anticipated.
