Matthew Perry was receiving multiple ketamine injections a day before death.
US - In the weeks leading up to his
untimely death, beloved actor Matthew Perry was receiving multiple ketamine
injections daily, a revelation that has shocked fans and the entertainment
industry alike. Known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV show Friends,
Perry’s struggles with addiction were well-documented, but the extent of his
ketamine use in his final days paints a harrowing picture.
According to
court documents and a plea agreement involving Perry’s former assistant,
Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry began using ketamine heavily in late September 2023.
Iwamasa, who had been living with Perry, was tasked with procuring the drug,
often using Perry’s money to buy it from various sources. The assistant’s plea
agreement provides a detailed timeline of Perry’s last month, revealing that he
was found unconscious at his home on two separate occasions before his death on
October 28, 2023.
The Role
of Ketamine
Ketamine, a
powerful aesthetic with hallucinogenic properties, is sometimes used in medical
settings for pain management and treatment-resistant depression. However, its
misuse can lead to severe physical and psychological effects. Perry’s use of
ketamine was reportedly so frequent that he was receiving injections up to
eight times a day. This excessive use likely contributed to his deteriorating
health and eventual death.
The
investigation into Perry’s death led to the arrest of five individuals,
including Iwamasa, Dr. Mark Chavez, Erik Fleming, Jasveen Sangha, and Dr.
Salvador Plasencia. Iwamasa, Chavez, and Fleming have agreed to plead guilty,
while Sangha and Plasencia have pleaded not guilty. The plea agreement outlines
how Iwamasa obtained ketamine from Plasencia and Fleming, who in turn sourced
it from Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen” of North Hollywood.
The Legal
Implications
The case has
highlighted the dangers of ketamine misuse and the lengths to which some
individuals will go to exploit those struggling with addiction. Prosecutors
allege that Perry paid over $55,000 for ketamine in the month before his death.
The documents also reveal that Iwamasa often administered the injections
himself, despite having no medical training. On several occasions, Plasencia
also injected Perry, including once in the back seat of a car in a parking lot.
The Final
Days
In the days
leading up to his death, Perry experienced severe adverse reactions to the
ketamine injections. He was reportedly unable to speak or move after one such
episode, just 16 days before his death. Despite these alarming signs, the
injections continued. On the day of his death, Perry allegedly asked Iwamasa to
“shoot me up with a big one” before he was found face down in his hot tub.
Matthew
Perry’s tragic end underscores the devastating impact of addiction and the
importance of proper medical oversight when dealing with powerful substances
like ketamine. As the legal proceedings continue, the entertainment world
mourns the loss of a talented actor whose life was cut short by a battle he
fought for many years. Perry’s story serves as a stark reminder of the need for
compassion and support for those struggling with addiction.
