Entertaining and action-packed throughout, this South Korean film encompasses a storyline filled with gory bloodshed and violence that will keep audiences’ hearts racing, on the edge of their seats.
The highly-acclaimed movie showcases Marco, the amateur boxer protagonist who is desperate to gather funds for a life-saving surgery for his mother. To do so, he is required to look for his wealthy estranged father who he has never seen before. In his travel from the Philippines to Korea, he realises he is being ruthlessly hunted down by an unusual, dangerous individual known as the Nobleman. More dangers seem to approach him, as he attempts to get past frenzied yet violent situations. This leads him to face a shocking revelation about his family that could prove to be life-threatening.
What makes this film so unique is that it is centred around an epic adrenaline rush that offers no explanation until the ending moments. As audiences look to their screen to continue watching, the movie showcases professionally improvised chase scenes that make use of the environment in spectacular fashion, while displaying meticulously choreographed hand-to-hand fight scenes.
The film has exceptionally delivered in their cast selection. Kim Seon-Ho made his film debut after a two-year acting hiatus. He portrays his role as the Nobleman with a visceral intensity, both terrifying and intimidating when he shows contrasting feelings like apathy and excited mania. Kim’s dynamic range of emotions to be both humorous and intimidating is a reason why the film has thrived in the box office.
Noted to be one of 2023’s best action films, The Childe has been nominated in a few film festivals, namely Catalonia-Sitges and Bandung for imported films. Kim Seon-Ho also claimed Best New Actor at 59th Grand Bell Awards, for his charismatic villain performance.
