Anwar: The Untold Story
Anwar: The Untold Story is a politically charged film that delves into the tumultuous events surrounding Anwar Ibrahim and his battle against corruption. Set in 1998, a year etched in the memory of Malaysians due to the Asian financial crisis, the movie focuses on the deteriorating relationship between Anwar and then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Story: This film depicts the struggles and triumphs of Anwar Ibrahim in politics, particularly his fight against corruption. The timeline of the story spans from 1993 to September 1998 and is based on a true story. The plot revolves around Anwar's unwavering stance in refusing various forms of bribes and cash from certain parties, as well as his reluctance to use public funds to bail out companies owned by certain leaders' children that have lost billions of ringgits. As a result, he was falsely accused of a massive conspiracy, fired, brutally beaten in prison, and left without medical treatment for several days. From being the best Finance Minister who successfully freed Malaysia from the shackles of debt, he eventually ended up in jail.
Cast: The film is directed by Viva Westi and stars Farid Kamil as Anwar Ibrahim, Hasnul Rahmat as Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Acha Septriasa as Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Review: The narrative unfolds through the lens of an "Anwarista" perspective, presenting Anwar as a principled leader fighting against corruption, cronyism, and nepotism. The film highlights his swift downfall, from being fired and accused of sexual deviancy to facing arrest and imprisonment. Malaysians who once believed Anwar held the future of the country in his hands were left stunned by the sudden change in narrative, which painted him as a revolting individual manipulated by foreign forces.
Anwar: The Untold Story offers an unapologetically hagiographical portrayal of Anwar, depicting him as an ideal figure in every aspect of his life. His unwavering devotion to prayer and his principled stand on justice are prominently featured, emphasising his alignment with the divine. While the film's overt adulation of Anwar may raise eyebrows, it surprisingly manages to captivate audiences to a certain degree, particularly due to the performance of Farid Kamil as Anwar.
Although the movie lacks polish and occasionally tries too hard to portray Anwar in a positive light, it presents gripping moments, particularly in exploring the trials faced by Anwar's family. The film succeeds in evoking empathy as we witness the anguish and uncertainty they endure. Notably, a powerful scene showcasing Wan Azizah's unwavering determination outside the gates of Bukit Aman, accompanied by a heartfelt musical performance by Siti Nurhaliza, leaves a lasting impact.
For Reformasi Anwaristas, Anwar: The Untold Story will be a nostalgic journey, offering the opportunity to relive the chaotic days and reconnect with familiar events, faces, and names. However, for viewers without political affiliations, the film falls into the "not bad" category. It provides moments of intrigue but lacks the finesse to appeal universally. Despite its shortcomings, the film holds the potential to warm the hearts of Anwar's supporters and sympathisers, reminiscent of looking at old photographs or engaging in conversation with an old friend.
