In a move reflective of ongoing industry challenges, Netflix has officially cancelled five shows, including the highly acclaimed Shadow & Bone and the adult animated series Agent Elvis, Glamorous, Farzaar, and Captain Fall, Variety has confirmed. By: Wee Yan Ling
The continuation of these series is the aftermath of the months-long work stoppages derived from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Netflix had made the decision to terminate these shows and is backed up by several factors, including the performance metrics and the lingering impact of the strikes. The industry is still navigating production schedules and scheduling shifts in response to the challenges.
All the cancelled series such as Agent Elvis, Glamorous, Farzaar, and Captain Fall had only run for one season before the termination. Despite Shadow & Bone amassing an impressive viewership and having launched a video game franchise, it had met the same outcome of termination after its second season.
The series is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels and weaves the tale of Alina Sarkoff as she navigated the challenges from an orphan to being the saviour of Ravka.
Despite the termination of popular series, Netflix had displayed their commitment in adult animation as there are renewals for the popular animated series such as Big Mouth, Q Force, Inside Job and Disenchantment. Netflix has continued to invest in adult animation with former HBO Max executive Billy Wee as director of animation.
