Jack Black has joined the cast of the live action Minecraft movie with Jason Momoa. The adaptation of the highly raved video game is garnering attention with its impeccable cast featuring Emma Myers from Wednesday and Danielle Brooks, from The Color Purple.

The production is backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary and is helmed by director Jared Hess who has prior experience in Napoleon Dynamite and Black’s collaborator on Nacho Libre. The production is scheduled to commence in New Zealand and slated for release in 2025, April.

Despite the attention revolving around the film, the plot and screenplay is still unknown. The movie has been a long-anticipated project with various directors like Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney and Peter Scollet once linked to the venture.

The video game has evolved to become one of the best-selling games internationally with an impressive 140 million monthly users. Renowned for its sandbox-style gameplay which allows players to craft 3D worlds with colourful blocks, the game has spawned several derivatives such as Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends. The producer will be Mojang Studios, the Swedish developer acquired by Microsoft in 2014.

Jack Black’s involvement in game-to-screen stories ensues with Minecraft after having participated in films such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jumanji: The Next Level, and the upcoming Borderlands from Lionsgate. Audiences can also anticipate his return in Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4.
