Warner Bros. Pictures is set to return to The Matrix, though whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are involved is unknown. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei
US - Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a fifth installment of The Matrix film franchise, surprising fans as the last movie, The Matrix Resurrections (2021) previously opened to mixed reviews and poor box office performance.
However, it is unclear if franchise leads Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who played the roles of Neo and Trinity, will reprise their roles in the upcoming fifth movie.
The new movie will be directed and written by Drew Goddard and not Lana or Lilly Wachowski, who have led past installments. However, Lana Wachowski will executive produce the film.
Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production, stated: “Drew [Goddard] came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Director Drew Goddard also stated: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
Goddard had previously been nominated for an Oscar for writing The Martian (2015). Additionally, he has writing credits for Cloverfield (2008) and World War Z (2013), as well as writing-directing credits for The Cabin in the Woods (2011) and Bad Times at the El Royale (2018).
The untitled fifth Matrix movie currently has no release window.
