Indian Box Office Record

Indian Box Office hits record $600 million in first half of 2024 with ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ leading the way. By: K Dass.

India - India’s box office has achieved a remarkable milestone, crossing $600 million (INR 5.015 billion) in the first six months of 2024. The driving force behind this success? The sci-fi action-adventure film, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan.

According to a report from Ormax Media, the cumulative gross box office revenue from January to June 2024 is 3% higher than the same period in 2023. ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ alone has contributed a whopping $92.3 million (INR 7.72 billion) since its release on June 27, accounting for 15% of India’s overall box office earnings.

Here’s a glimpse of the top 10 releases in the first half of 2024:

Kalki 2898 AD’: $92.3 million (INR 7.72 billion)

Fighter’: $29 million (INR 2.43 billion)

Hanu-Man’: $28.7 million (INR 2.4 billion)

‘Shaitaan’: $21.3 million (INR 1.78 billion)

Manjummel Boys’: $20.3 million (INR 1.7 billion)

Guntur Kaaram’: $17 million (INR 1.42 billion)

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire’: $16.2 million (INR 1.36 billion)

Munjya’: $14.5 million (INR 1.21 billion)

‘Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life’: $12.4 million (INR 1.04 billion)

‘Aavesham’: $12 million (INR 1.01 billion)

Interestingly, the chart lacks Tamil-language titles this year, despite their strong presence in 2023. However, Malayalam-language films have surged, accounting for 15% of the box office, up from 5% last year. Telugu films maintain their share, while Punjabi cinema has seen growth thanks to the success of ‘Jatt & Juliet 3’ in June.

With a promising lineup of titles for the second half of 2024, including ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule,’ ‘Stree 2,’ and ‘Singham Again,’ India’s box office could break its own record set in 2023. The film industry continues to thrive, captivating audiences with diverse stories and genres.
