Historic Case of 1960s Rape Survivor Garners International Release

Vertical has acquired the North American rights to Miranda’s Victim, a compelling courtroom drama led by Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine). By: Syahmi Zulqarnain

The film had its world premiere as the opener for the 2023 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Set for a simultaneous release on October 6th, Arclight Films will manage international sales.

Inspired by true events, the narrative follows the harrowing journey of 18-year-old Trish Weir (Breslin) in 1963, who fell victim to kidnapping and sexual assault. After her assailant, Ernesto Miranda (Sebastian Quinn), voluntarily confesses, he faces conviction. However, the U.S. Supreme Court later overturns the verdict due to the absence of legal counsel during his confession. In the subsequent retrial, an unwavering prosecutor (Luke Wilson) strives to hold Miranda accountable, despite a rigorous defence mounted by Miranda's attorney (Ryan Phillippe).

The ensuing legal battle leaves an indelible mark on the nation's justice system. Trish Weir's case becomes particularly significant as it leads to the establishment of Miranda rights for criminal suspects in police custody, ensuring the admissibility of interrogation statements during subsequent legal proceedings.

Michelle Danner, the director, stated, "This is a story about courage and justice. Within the court of law, it was a case of personal justice, but what makes it fascinating is that it ends up becoming iconic justice."

The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Luke Wilson, Emily VanCamp, Mireille Enos, Enrique Murciano, Josh Bowman, and others. The screenplay by J. Craig Stiles is based on his story co-written with George Kolber & Richard Lasser. The production involves notable names like George Kolber, Valerie Debler, Alexandra Guarnieri, and others.

Vertical's Senior VP of Acquisitions, Tony Piantedosi, praised the performances of Breslin and Quinn, emphasizing the film's portrayal of frustration and empowerment within this historic criminal case. Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey and Piantedosi handled the deal on behalf of the company, in collaboration with CAA Media Finance representing the filmmakers.
