Director Destin Daniel Cretton Exits Marvel’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

The Shang-Chi director has announced his departure as director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, an upcoming major superhero film in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. By: Dylan Low

Kang Dynasty, similar to Avengers: Infinity War as the penultimate major film of this current Marvel era, was recently postponed and not set to premiere until May 1, 2026. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, which ends the chapter known as The Multiverse Saga by Marvel.

Besides the director, the situation of Kang Dynasty has garnered lots of speculation. Actor Jonathan Majors has portrayed the official villain Kang in both Loki on Disney+ and recent film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, his future with Marvel is uncertain as he awaits trial for domestic abuse charges.

Unlike the two-part saga of 2018 and 2019’s Infinity War and Endgame respectively, they were both filmed and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Only Cretton was initially hired to direct The Kang Dynasty, with no director slated for Secret Wars yet.

Despite leaving his role in Kang Dynasty, he is not permanently ending relations with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will still be directing the sequel to his 2021 blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is currently in charge of Disney+ series Wonder Man for Marvel Studios. The TV series, directed and executive produced by Cretton, was suspended by the strikes but will soon resume production.
