Thanksgiving 2 in production with Eli Roth

Director Eli Roth is returning for the second Thanksgiving. He is currently preparing a sequel to his holiday-themed slasher film, with the follow-up film slated to screen theatrically in 2025. It remains unseen if any cast members will be back for the second movie. By: Dylan Low

“BREAKING NEWS! John Carver will kill again!” The Thanksgiving director captioned on an Instagram video, alluding to the film’s villain character. “Thank you everyone who supported ORIGINAL HORROR in theatres!!! Go see it now on the big screen while it’s in cinemas, sequel set for release in 2025! Taking a year to really get the script right, working on it starting today!”

Thanksgiving premiered earlier in November, earning $10 million in North America and grossed $30 million internationally to date, which revenue does not exactly justify that of a blockbuster film. However, with the film costing $15 million for production, Sony’s TriStar Pictures, who had made the original film must feel the need to return for a sequel.

The concept for Thanksgiving first originated from an ill-famed fake trailer that Roth produced for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s feature film Grindhouse, 16 years ago.

Thanksgiving consisted of main characters portrayed by Patrick Dempsey and TikTok star Addison Rae. It is about an unknown, axe-wielding slasher who causes mayhem in Plymouth, Mass, following a Black Friday riot that ends in tragedy.

It landed an average “B-” CinemaScore - a common grade of horror films, but achieved a surprisingly good 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
