Wonka debuts with $43.2 million in box office internationally

The much-anticipated Christmas musical, Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, dazzled the global box office with a delectable $43.2 million from its opening weekend in 37 overseas markets. By: Wee Yan Ling

Wonka had emerged as the victor on the global chart as it had garnered an impeccable $43.2 million in its debut across the 37 overseas markets. The musical which tells the backstory of Willy Wonka from the iconic novel of Roald Dahl, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has generated a lot of attention since its release.

The film had been a major hit as it expanded worldwide and is expected to hit $40 million in the domestic launch. The festive season is anticipated to keep the ratings high which allows for Wonka to be a potential holiday blockbuster.

The musical had surpassed even The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns. The last major Hollywood musical success, The Greatest Showman, had accumulated $434 million in international ticket sales. 

Wonka had catapulted itself to the frontlines in 32 out of the 37 markets where it premiered. Imax theaters have contributed to a compelling $2.3 million to the overall opening gross. Whereas U.K. had garnered a $1.1 million debut and hence marked Warner Bros’ the second largest opening of the year in the region. The musical had surpassed renowned titles such as Paddington, The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
