BBC Commissions Pompeii: The New Dig Archaeology Series

Lion Television has been commissioned to work on ‘Pompeii: The New Dig’ for BBC Two and iPlayer.

This ground-breaking series will centre around the largest excavation undertaken in a generation at one of the world's most renowned archaeological sites, Pompeii. Viewers will be taken on a mesmerising journey as the dig uncovers extraordinary finds, while also shedding light on the lives of real individuals who once called Pompeii home.

Overseen by Pompeii expert Elena Mortelliti and Marco Gangarossa, the three-part series is a joint venture with All3Media International as the distributor and is scheduled to premiere in 2024.

Head of commissioning for specialist factual at BBC Jack Bootle expressed his excitement to work on the set of the show, “I’m delighted that the team at Pompeii are allowing the BBC to document this extraordinary excavation in a major three-part series. The dig has already yielded some incredible treasures, including new remains and the recently discovered ‘pizza fresco,’ and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

Chief creative officer at Lion TV Richard Bradley added, “To be filming a new dig of this scale at Pompeii is a unique privilege. The audience will have a ring-side seat as the archaeologists open a window into the ancient Roman world frozen in time 2,000 years ago. The discoveries are already thrilling, with more to come.”
