US - NBCUniversal has announced that they will be bringing their live coverage of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games to over 150 IMAX theatres in the US on July 26.
The news comes after the previous announcement that the NBC network would also be covering the whole event on its broadcast network and its streaming service Peacock.
In a media statement, president of NBC Olympics Gary Zenkel said the following: "We look forward to providing our Opening Ceremony coverage to audiences at IMAX locations across the country, sharing in this historic moment as the world gathered to witness the spectacular beginning of 16 days of athletic greatness against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”
"We are excited to extend NBC's coverage of the Opening Ceremony to IMAX theatres across the U.S., allowing fans to gather and watch the highly-anticipated and awe-inspiring start to the Paris Olympic Games this July," said CEO of IMAX Rich Gelfond added.
The 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony will not be a stadium show. Rather, the Olympics will open with a river parade held at the River Seine where close to 100 boats will carry thousands of athletes from over 200 countries.
Currently, NBCUniversal owns the US media rights to the Olympic Games until 2032, allowing the network to cover the games in Paris (2024), Milan Cortina (2026), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032). The host city for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games has not been determined.
The 2024 Olympic Games will run from July 26 to August 11 2024. Ticketing details for the IMAX screenings of the 2024 Olympics’ opening ceremony have not yet been revealed.
