William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist narrates the story after the passing of Victor Fielding’s pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela singlehandedly.
When Angela and Katherine returned from the woods three days later after disappearing in the woods, the girls seemed to have no recollection of what happened during their ordeal. In turn, a series of chain events ensued, forcing Victor to come face to face with the nadir of evil and seek out of desperation and horror to the only person alive who had encountered a similar experience.
The story narrates a little girl named Regan who is exhibiting an array of disturbing behaviour. Which includes urinating on the floor and unleashing profanity-laden language. After undergoing fruitful medical tests, including the infamous arteriogram scene, Regan’s mother turns to a priest from a nearby university for help.
However, Regan’s behaviour has deteriorated far beyond disrupting her mother’s social gatherings, and speculations as to her daughter’s connection to the tragic demise of an old friend are raised.
Touted as violent, polarising and disturbing, it is exactly what lures people into this horror film. This film is based on a novel with the same name and have underwent a lot of controversy and critical acclaim, generating a cult following over the as time goes.
The upcoming version of the film will come in the form of a trilogy, with the initial movie scheduled for a debut on the 6th of October. It was previously scheduled for release on the 13th but was moved forward due to the highly anticipated concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Ellen Burstyn, an Academy Award winner, is set to return to her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, the mother of the possessed Regan MacNeil. Her character portrayed a famous actress who went separate ways from her actor husband and is living with her husband on a film set. Due to her immaculate performance, she earned herself a nomination for Best Actress.
Leslie Odom Jr. another Academy Award nominee renowned for his Hamilton role, will star as Victor Fielding. Jennifer Nettles, best known as one-half country music duo Sugarland, will portray the mother of the other possessed child.
