Description

The film is set in the Philippines in 1945, predominantly told through the eyes of a young girl named Tala, portrayed brilliantly by the newcomer Felicity Kyle Napuli. Their wealth and reclusive mansion may have provided them with shelter and protection from the way, however, it is not long after that the perils and challenges reach into the depths of their home and endanger their security and lives.

Tala’s father departs to seek assistance from the Americans while her mother and brother stay behind, living each day with no idea when his return would be. When Tala’s mother falls terribly ill, Tala discovers a fairy in the woods and asks for assistance, in exchange for an offer that is too heavy for her to bear. Unknowingly, she had invited a malevolent force beyond imagination.

Just when you believe you've understood where the story is heading, unsettling and grim imagery drags you further into the abyss. The gruesome and haunting visuals embed themselves onto your brain, skillfully guided by Dagatan’s storytelling. The movie is not for the faint-hearted as this nightmarish tale is where terror manifests into its most potent form.

In My Mother’s Skin excels on all fronts. Their meticulously designed sets of both the mansion and wooded surroundings, offers a visually stunning experience. Eddie Huang and Chen Yi Ling made a lasting impression with their exceptional sound design, akin to the disconcerting insect that literally embeds itself in Ligaya’s skin.
