Despite the festive season, the Thanksgiving box office witnesses a mixed performance as Disney's Wish and Apple's Napoleon vie for audience attention and box office dominance. By: Wee Yan Ling
The Thanksgiving Eve box office witnessed the face-off between Disney’s animated film, Wish and Apple Original productions’ epic, Napoleon. The box office is on the verge of slumber due to both films having fallen short of their blockbuster expectations.
Disney’s animated film delves into the origin story of the iconic wishing star from the other Disney adventures. However, it had only amassed a lacklustre $8.3 million on Wednesday. Despite the hefty $200 million cost of production, the film is projected to earn just over $37 million over the span of five days. The depressing performance had added to the many concerns of Disney’s creative and commercial impediment as they struggled to uphold their animation business and Marvel division fanbases.
Coming closely behind, there is Apple Original Productions’ Napoleon. The $200 million Ridley Scott epic had only managed to earn a revenue of $7.7 million on Wednesday. In spite of the lengthy runtime, R rating and the focal point of long-dead military genius, the film is anticipated to garner more than $30 million over the five days. Internationally, the film is projected to garner a substantial amount of $65 million.
As we advance through the holiday period, the battle for box office supremacy contines and films battle to turn the ride for a more lucrative run.
